The Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program, also known as MRVP, is funded each year by the state legislature. With a Massachusetts rental voucher, low-income individuals and families can rent their next home. The tenant pays up to 40 percent of his or her income toward rent and utilities; the Massachusetts rental voucher covers the rest of the housing costs. The subsidy is paid directly to the landlord.
To be eligible for MRVP, your net income must be less than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level ($44,100 for a family of four as of 2009). MRVP is unique because vouchers, when available, may be given to anyone who meets this income requirement: indiviudal, families, elders and people with disabilities.
"Mobile" vouchers can be used in any apartments that meet the state sanitary code. The voucher value is a set amount that is determined by the tenant’s income, household size, and location. The state currently has a "freeze" on the MRVP mobile voucher program; MBHP cannot accept applications or issue new vouchers in this program.
“Project-based” vouchers are assigned to a specific housing unit or development. MRVP project-based vouchers cannot be transferred; they are tied to a specific apartment or development and a tenant may not transfer the voucher to another unit.
