Housing vouchers bridge the gap between the cost of housing and the incomes of low wage earners and people on limited fixed incomes.
With a federal or state subsidy, low-income individuals and families can rent their next home. The tenant pays up to 40% of his or her income to rent; the subsidy pays the remainder.
MBHP determines tenant eligibility, inspects apartments to ensure they meet housing quality standards, negotiates fair market rents, and pays subsidies directly to landlords.
We also work closely with voucher holders to assist them with programs, information, and services that can help them find and sustain decent housing and achieve economic self-sufficiency.
MBHP is one of many agencies in the Greater Boston area which administers rental assistance programs. For more information about all of our programs, please contact our Housing Consumer Education Center at (617) 425-6700.
Why do people need rental assistance?
The dire housing shortage in Massachusetts forces low-income people to spend most of their income on rent and then sacrifice other essentials, commute long distances to work, suffer overcrowded or unsafe conditions, or lose their housing altogether.
Many families, unable to afford Greater Boston’s high-priced housing, are driven into shelters or onto the street. Rental assistance can help residents to afford to live in the safe, decent housing in the neighborhoods of their choosing.
